The Library, established in 2008, is 100% community owned and is governed by the local community management committee. All members of the community; including school children, teachers, adolescent boys and girls, women groups, farmers, local entrepreneurs and other local dwellers have access to the library, irrespective of caste, creed, religion or gender.
The Library aims to address the tremendous need of the local people for access to information through its Outreach Program. Students will be able to access books and the internet to expand their knowledge and help with school work. Women and mothers will learn about improved health care, early childhood development and expanding economic opportunities. Everyone will have the opportunity to gather here and learn from each other. An audio-visual section will offer free access to a variety of economic, social and educational programs for all ages, genders and literacy levels. We are striving to make The Oceanic Library a vibrant community centre, dedicated to improving the quality of life for the people of the area.
Sections of the Library
The Library has various sections in its premises, including the main library area, a conference hall, cultural section, audio visual and computer section and an ICT access area. There are also dedicated sections for children, youth, women and the elderly.
Income Generating Programmes
Workshops on topics such as rent, computer skills, fishery and ponds on lease will help people to become independent economically, whilst the proceeds from the workshops will help to financially sustain the library.
Mobile School Libraries
In order to create better access to books and reference materials for the school students The Oceanic Library plans to build mobile libraries in the schools that could supply books on weekly basis and encourage reading on the school campus.
Community Centre
The community centre will act as a multi-purpose facility for gatherings such as festivals, formal meetings, informal discussions, cultural activities, and school events.
Literacy Promotion
The library would undertake various literacy activities like story writing, poem writing, essay writing, wall newspaper preparations etc. on regular basis to promote education to the community children. To promote literacy among mothers the library would conduct several programs such as skill-upgrade training, health awareness and home science awareness.
ICT intervention program
In order to promote the use of the internet as an information and communication resource, The Oceanic Library would provide an ICT Centre to promote computer literacy among children, women, youth and elderly people.
Sculpturing Minds
The library resolves to help people to cultivate their minds through spending their idle time in the midst of books and other sources of knowledge.
