Chameli was born in Ramlochanpur, a remote rural village of South 24 Parganas district. Her family belongs to the most marginalized caste, and she was brought up in extreme poverty, deprived of all the basic needs of life. Before coming to VSSU's Home for destitute children, she lived in a small mud hut together with 7 family members in appalling conditions. They could not even afford 2 proper meals a day. Her father was alcoholic and left her mother, who had to resort to begging and could not sustain her children anymore. She then heard about VSSU's 'Home for children' and decided to send Chameli there.
Chameli has lived at the Home for destitute children for the past 3 years. She is a shy girl who enjoys dancing. English is her favourite subject in school, but when someone asks her about her future she does not know the answer yet, indeed she is still learning what it means to dream. Help Chameli and many others to keep dreaming of a future without poverty. |

Manoj comes from Gangadharpur, a small fishing village on the coastal fringes of South 24 Parganas. His life changed before he could even realize it, as his father lost his leg due to a severe illness when he was still a baby. In order to keep sustaining her husband, her mother in law and her three children, Manoj's mother became a maid servant. She worked long hours and it is Manoj's sister who had to prepare the day's meal for everyone. All 6 family members lived together in a small mud hut which didn't even offer shelter from the rain. When VSSU's Home for destitute children opened in 2005, Manoj's mother had become desperate and sent him there.
He misses her very much and she seldom comes to visit him as the trip from Gangadharpur is too costly. However, although he is a shy boy, Manoj has adapted to his new environment. When asked about his future, there seems to be no doubt in his mind. With sadness and determination, Manoj says that he wants to become a doctor so he can one day cure his father. Help Manoj fulfil his dream, so that his father's life and many others might be saved. |
